Uncle Ben

So Uncle Ben passed away tonight. I enjoyed speaking to him on his visits to Israel. The last time I saw him I believe was actually 2019 at Ahron's Bar Mitzvah. I'm mostly sad for Zayde, Bubby, my parents, and aunts and uncles who had a strong relationship with him.

As always when someone I know passes away, I try to find tangible things that I can keep forever, showing that I knew this person and had a relationship with them. Here is an email he sent us before our wedding:

Daniel and Shifra,

We want to wish you and all your mishpachas  (that’s WV slang for family) a hearty

Mazel Tov. Just cannot apologize enough for not being with you to  celebrate such a

Glorious wedding . I feel so glad to have met Shifra recently and JoEllen, Elizabeth and I look

Forward to watching  via Facebook.

Sending  you all our love,

Ben, JoEllen and Elizabeth

Football game 4 - First TD and shutting out an undefeated team

I needed an optimistic football related thing after the Lions blew away a great chance to knock off the bills on Thanksgiving. We were on a 2 game win streak, but facing a team who was previously undefeated. I also created a rotations chart to make sure we would stay competitive but still have everyone play enough. Luckily, 2 guys weren't there, so with 8 guys, it wasn't necessary. It was also Zus's first game, and he killed it. Was so happy for him.

We went in and dominated on defense from the first play. I was in the middle for the entire game, and the guys around me made it easy. We shut them out for the entire game, and have now given up only 1 touchdown in 2 weeks. I don't even think they got more than 1 first down.

On offense, we started out slow, but managed 19 points. On one drive to get the third touchdown, there were two plays where I was heavily involved in.

First one: Crazy play on 4th down. Gotta have it, and I was on the O line for it -

Second one: A Tight End slip to me for the TD. I didn't even realize how close we were to the end zone at that point, but then I saw the pylons and reached out -

The Zacks Family and the Case of the Missing Burrito

Shabbat with a lot of the cousins was super fun. It started off on Friday with wings and (thank you Maalot Zacks') beer. Jonah was very excited about a game where you throw a burrito at someone, and we were planning on playing it that night. Until - we got back from Shul and saw that there was only one burrito left in the box. Someone had taken burrito #1. Throughout dinner we searched for it, but to no avail.

Dinner was great, and favorite tunes such as Kah Echsof filled the room. Towards the end of dinner, the burrito was found. Hadar had ripped the eyes off the first one, but what mattered more was having both. The burrito was found in Eitan's bike, in the room Naftali and Ephraim were sleeping in. Make your own judgement about who you think stole the burrito. After dinner, there were lots of games being played, including Set, CodeNames, among others.

But the real battle of the night was the impromptu mini golf game. See, David had given Daniel a toilet soccer game at one of the Chanukah gift giving games, but it had never been opened until that night, when Jonah, Sammy, Naftali, and Daniel battled it out. Each kept score on a different toy. Daniel - on the clock on the toy kitchen. Naftali - on an abacus. Sammy - on fraction cards. Jonah - on a rings toy. Between each of the nine holes, the starting points were moved, as well as the obstacles. Naftali began the game with a hole-in-one, but it was Jonah who had the lead for the first 7 holes. At this point, there were no other games being played, so everyone's attention was on this important mini golf game. In the second to last hole, Daniel grabbed his first lead of the day. He would hold on to win it in the last round, beating Jonah and Sammy by just one putt, and Naftali by only 3. What an evening.

The next day, all the boys were in Shul by 8:30. After what seemed like a long service to some of the boys, we headed over to Arye and Aviva for Kiddush and lunch. The food was delicious, the company even better. After lunch we headed back to Daniel and Shifra's for more games. As Shabbat was running out, Daniel challenged everyone to build a train set using all of the train pieces they had. It was unsuccessful, as we couldn't get them all to fit with each other. The problem was there was no one managing it, rather everyone was too focused on their own.

After Maariv, there was perhaps the most musical Havdala I had ever been part of. Every single person, had an instrument, ranging from Guitars to ukuleles, from shaking toys to harmonica toys. Once Havdala ended, it quickly shifted into wedding music and of course the classic Sha Sha Shavua Tov!

Thank you to Daniel, Shifra, Avigail, Ephraim, Nava, Charlie, Naftali, Chanalana, Jonah, Nachala, Aura, Sammy, Kayla (Eitan and Hadar) for attending. Thanks to Arye and Aviva for hosting lunch. Those who were unable to attend were certainly missed.

What a special shabbat.

Bameara Asher Bisdei Hamachpela

What an incredible Shabbat I was able to attend (thank you Shifra). It was so special, so fun, and such an experience I will never forget. This blog was created for exactly things like this, so I can remember all the small details later.

It started on Friday, where Daddy and Fry picked me up from Kraft. We had just won, 20-7, to improve to 2-1. I played some good defense, pulling flags, knocking down passes in the end zone, and just playing that middle linebacker role, where you are responsible for the Tight End, the QB sneak, anyone in your zone, and deciding when to blitz/with how many rushers.

We drove straight from there to Kiryat Arba, not encountering too much traffic on the way. Once we settled, we tried to find something to eat, and there was already a special feeling in the air. We found deli, pickles, Mezonot rolls, and had ourselves some lunch on a corner. We got front row seats to towing of cars that were illegally parked.

As Shabbat started to get closer, we walked down to the Meara. Good thing we did, because for the first time in my life, I was able to go into Ohel Yitzchak. As we got in, we noticed an entire crowd from Modiin. Shai and Yehuda, who I was responsible for, wanted to go outside, but I was able to convince them to stay in. It was a beautiful prayer of hundreds of people. We did go out for Maariv, and found a Minyan on the stairs. Which is great except the masses pushing to try to go up and down. Never before have I been shoved and pushed by females in the middle of Davening. After Davening, we had to try to find V and my dad, which was pretty difficult in the masses. Finally, we did, and it was time to start walking home. My dad and I got separated from the rest, and had the tough decision of waiting in case they didn't pass us yet, or walking. After 7 minutes, I realized there was no way we were in front, and we decided to walk. Finally we got back, and 10 minutes later they did (they had gone another direction).

Dinner was delicious, with yummy salads, delicious chicken soup, and my dad's pastrami. Company was great too. After dinner, we left to go til Chazon David shul to hear Ben Gvir speak. Now, we assumed that Chazon David shul would be at least the size of ours, if thats where BG would speak to presumably a lot of people. Turns out, it was a wooden shul that has been rebuilt 22 times so far. It also happened to be the spot of the Pigua last week. And it also happened to be very tiny for the crowd that was coming in. We got the last seats, but people were pouring in. This made my dad and me nervous, but it was too late to leave. Once BG was winding down, we made a break for the exit, but it took 10 minutes because people were still trying to enter. Btw , BG spoke very nicely, about going with your truth like Avraham. He gave a couple of examples where he did that over the past year.

After BG's speech, my dad and I walked down to the Meara. We smelled the entrance to Gan Eden.and then we sat down to learn Torah together we learned all the Psukim that had to do with the Meara. It was actually very cool to visualize it. After that, we walked up and down the roads with the whole nation up to Shavei Chevron. It was an amazing atmosphere, walking by the tents etc. Once we were ready, we walked back to Avichai's house for the night, finally putting our heads on the pillow at 12:30ish.

We woke up around 8, had some Fruity Pebbles (at least some of us did), and walked down to the Meara for the third time. Again, great atmosphere, but less packed than Friday night. We found the Modiin minyan, where we heard the very Torah reading that talks about how Avraham purchased the land and the cave. What a moment. After that, we found different Minyans to piece our Davening together. After davening, we walked to the bottom of the stairs for a huge, constantly running Kiddush that Chabbad put on. Drinks, fruit, chulent, Kugel. It was fantastic. We then were invited to go to the Modiin Kiddush at Beit Hashalom, but my dad told Uncle Dave we'd meet him at the same time. Realizing that these were more my dad's friends than mine, I told him to go and that we would bring Dave to Avichai. At that point, Ben Gvir walked by and I shook his hand and said Shabbat Shalom. (Side note: Man, that guy is a freaking rock star in that area.) Once I found Ephraim, we also did the walk up to Shavei. But that kid is also a rockstar in those parts. He was Mr. Popular this weekend. On this walk for example we were stopped a couple times to sing wedding songs in his honor. On our way, we passed Ben Gvir coming down. I shook his hand again, but Fry was a little up and missed him. I motioned to Ben Gvir towards Ephraim and he turned around took a couple of steps to shake his hand. Cool moment.

We found Dave, picked my dad up from the Kiddush, and made our way back up for lunch at the Kates home. Again, another delicious meal (Chulent, salads, chicken, and schwarma tortillas). Hadar and Avichai make a great meal. After the meal, we went to Eliana's principals house. He spent 45 minutes telling us the entire history of Mearat Hamachpela from creation of the world, all the way til today, and answering all our questions. He showed us pictures and diagrams as well. It was absolutely fascinating, all the way from the expulsion from Gan Eden, to why Avraham wanted it, to the Christian and Muslim periods with it, to Rav Goren saying they'd daven Shachrit there after they got Chevron back in the morning, to the little girl and then yeshiva boys going down to take pictures and see, and all the way til the archeology being dug there today.

After that, it was time to make our fourth and final trip back down.  We davened mincha, and I realized I knew this Parsha by heart, and so we tried to find a minyan. There I was in the main minyan in Avraham's area, reading the Torah parts that talked about Yitzchak and Rivka having two kids, Yaakov and Eisav. Literally, reading about the pregnancy of our third forefather, and the last one to be buried right under where we standing. I don't get chills as often as I used to, but this was a really special moment, a definite highlight of this Shabbat Chevron.

From there, we left the Meara and walked out, only to see what looked like the aftermath of some issue. From that point on, there were even more soldiers, and they had helmets on. We walked up, but weren't allowed to go into the Shavei building. We stopped at the side of the road, someone gave us Rugelach, and we had a beautiful Seuda Shlishit in the holy city of Chevron, in the front of someone's yard, where there is food for soldiers. People joined us for the singing. From there, we davened Maariv, saw Baruch Marzel walking, and walked back to Avichai.

What a special weekend.

Contact Flag Game 2 - A W.

Got a W. Dropped the easiest pass I will ever have thrown to me for a touchdown, but we scored on the next play. On the defensive drive after, I got a pick on a jump ball that was between me and a guy a head taller, so that felt good. I played very well defensively. Even nicer than the pick might've been a play in the end zone I made. A guy went up to get it, and as he was coming down, I knocked it out, saving a touchdown. There was a punt we got blocked (A guy me and EF were supposed to take got through - huge dude). They didn't like us running the clock out either, saying thats so gay. But we wanted to win, so we called timeout with one second left, and Z threw a beautiful TD to O, giving us the 32-18 lead. It felt so good to win, and I am loving this league. But I am not loving the TD drop. I don't thin I've ever dropped that pass in my life in a game.

Election Day Fun

What a fun election day this was. I imagine this is what Sundays feel like to people outside in America.

To start the day we built a huge train track with the new train track pieces that we got. After that, we had a dance party with lots of musical instruments including a keyboard, a guitar, harmonica, a flute  and of course a Torah. From there we went to the park with Shifra's parents where we climbed on toys and ran around and Eitan hit some balls super far. From there, it was time to go home and rest and get ready for the Safari with my parents and Nava. During this break, I went with Eitan to vote. Evewn in the voting station, I still wasn't sure, so I procrastinated by writing MordyShap on a paper. In the end, I was still debating AS, BG, and IBG, and in the end, I went with Gantz. The Safari was a lot of fun we got to see lots of different animals including monkeys, lions, bears. Hadar and Eitan loved it and were very excited. Their favorite animal to look at for a long time was probably the giraffe. Hadar loved to chase the little hens running around. We also loved the pop up areas where we were able to poke her head out and see the groundhogs from very close.

Next year in Tehran?

Well, we knew it was coming, just didn't know when. Another crazy week in the '20s here in Israel. Thursday night was wonderful. it...
